From the Premuda hut the trail follows Val Rosandra and then climbs Mount Stena. After Bazzoni woods the trail winds around the Padriciano golf course. At Mount Spaccato the trail meets the SS. 202 road and begins to climb again at Mount Calvo where there are a series of specially built viewing points known as vedetta. After vedetta Alice the trail climbs all the way to the Obelisk.
The route goes the full length of the Rosandra valley, along the banks of the river. Continue past a charming waterfall to the hamlet of Bottazzo, where the trail reaches a disused railway. From here, the Via Alpina red route, until now the same as the yellow route, heads off towards the Slovene border. The trail now heads up onto the Karst high plateau, (trail 48), to the tiny hamlet of San Lorenzo, at 377m, and its stunning views over the Rosandra valley. Continue through thin woods near a quarry and across the Karst plain (trail 49/1) to road SS14, and cross over towards the Padriciano golf course and on up to Mount Spaccato (405m). A little beyond that and slightly further down, the trail passes under road SS202 and joins trail 1, near Mount Calvo (454m). Here begin the vedette (purpose built viewing points). The Vedetta Alice is a great viewing point, looking out over the bay of Muggia and its naval dockyards. To the right is the city of Trieste. After cutting through Borgo Conconello, the trail passes a number of TV masts. Head down onto a track that leads to the Obelisk (187m). Near the Obelisco campsite is road SS58 from Trieste, leading up to Opicina and on to the border with the Slovene Republic at Fernetti. A quaint, rack-railway tram line links Trieste to the high plateau. (Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia)
Natural and cultural heritage
The Rosandra stream runs through the Rosandra valley. At the bottom of the valley the river becomes an impressive 40m high waterfall. The valley has a surface area of about 450 hectares and winds through scree slopes, cliffs and ledges and cave-like formations, creating a fascinating landscape with more than a touch of wilderness about it. The most famous mountaineers in the region cut their teeth here and it is the location of the “E. Comici” climbing school. The area is rich in typically Alpine as well as Mediterranean flora and fauna. There is the Karst scrub land, there is Austrian Black Pine and, near the plains, Turkey Oak woods. Some of the common wildlife species that inhabit the area are the kestrel, the eagle owl, the wallcreeper and the rock partridge. The influence of the nearby Slavonic countries, linguistically, culturally, architecturally and gastronomically, is obvious throughout this region. (Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia)

Chaude journée sur l'itinéraire avec trés peu de dénivellé et la traversée de quelques beaux villages.
Source et petite auberge dans le hameau de BOTTAZZO ( Val Rosandra ) .
Surprise en arrivant à Villa OPICINA...Avec des couts d'entretien devenus trop élévés, il ne reste désormais du tramway que les rails et une rame garée derriere des grilles sur l'Avenue qui conduit à l'Obélisque !...

In Botazzo muss man nach links aufsteigen (nicht geradeaus nach Slowenien). An der Bahnlinie habe ich den Weiterweg nicht gefunden. Bin statt dess links der Bahnlinie entlang gegangen bis von links der Weg Nr 15 kreuzt. Dem bin ich rechts bis San Lorenzo gefolgt. In Villa Opicina kann ich das Hotel Daneu empfehlen

Stage 2 was mainly on good paths through woodland. We stayed again at the Alabarda, having got to the start of the stage by bus from Trieste. To get back to Trieste from Opicina, we took the old tram, a real treat, particularly the way it has to be changed from electric overhead power to the ratchet system at the steep middle section. Weather hot and sultry, with heavy downpours. The sea views were great.
