Nice for lunch during a day-hike from Carcoforo, or for an alternate place to stay Rifugio Massero is 1000 meters above Carcoforo on the edge of the Valsesia Natural Park. The food is good and the people are friendly. Information on their website at http://www.alpinerunner.it/en/rifugio/

For an even greater adventure, you can hike from Rifugio Massero over the mountain to Rifugio Valle, also in the Park, but now you are truly departing from the Via Alpina! And it is a challenging hike, over many boulders and sometimes with snow. Rifugio Valle is operated by a family with cows, sheep and goats; excellent cooks, very comfortable beds and a wonderful shower. More information here http://www.areeprotettevallesesia.it/rifugi.html

Very great, if sometimes also strenuous hike on the Colle del Termo by Rima. Who the next ascent to Rifugio Ferioli is too much, can either stay in Rima in the Alpe Brusa or better in Posto Tappa Grillo Brillo. Who has stayed here, can go directly to Alagna the next day over the Colle Mud. The Rifugio Ferioli had closed during the week, but an acceptable winter room (4 beds) and a great terrace with beautiful views. Here you can watch in the evenings and ibex.

In Rima, "Camere Tagliaferro" is a stately mountain hotel run by the same family since the early 1900s. Wide-plank floors and super comfortable beds make this the 'luxury' alternative to the Posto Tappa in Rima. 65 euros with dinner in 2012. Only four rooms available. +39 333 888 5924
