Historical and architectural information: Redipuglia, the largest Military Shrine in Italy, rises on the western side of Mount Sei Busi, which was bitterly contended during World War I because, although not very high, it would allow a great scope of access control from West to the first steps onto the karst shelf. The palatial stairs where the urns of the 100,000 Dead are lined up, with the monolithic one of the Duke of Aosta – third Army’s commander - at its base, conveys the image of a Great Unit’s battle array in the field, with its Commander at the head. Here lay the mortal rests of 100,187 Dead: 39,857 known and 60,330 unknown.
